Date of Passing: Dec 31, 2005
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOAN MARGARET SKENE (nee WATSON) It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of our mother and grandmother at her home on Saturday, December 31, 2005. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Nancy (Garry); beloved granddaughter Courtney; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Hainsworth and Kathleen Tompsett; and her special nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband Edwin; and her brother William. Mom was born in Winnipeg and lived in the Lord Roberts area until marrying Dad. She worked at the Legislature for several years in the Department of Fish and Games until she became a stay at home Mom. She was a caring and devoted mother and wife, and she loved cooking, sewing, reading books, visiting Westhawk and Clear Lake, anything the colour pink, and spending time with family and friends. Living in the Riverview area, she was active with the Community Centre Good Neighbours Group for 30 years and participated in the UCW Group of Riverview Church. She loved making many crafts, baking for the teas and fundraisers, and especially enjoyed the company of the other members. Mom was involved with many of the Khartum Temple activities with Dad, and was a member of their Ladies Auxiliary for 25 years. Mom liked to travel to different places, and among the most memorable was a trip to Morocco and a Caribbean cruise with her Shrine friends. Another memorable moment for Mom was donating the Spruce tree, which she planted in 1955 in front of the house, to the City Hall for all to enjoy for Christmas. She loved spending time with her granddaughter, whether it was baking, making crafts, or attending dance recitals, they always had fun. She especially enjoyed their trips to lunch and the movies. Mom was blessed with the most wonderful friends, relatives and neighbours. She felt very lucky to have the special visits, phone calls, lunches and outings with all of them. She was a truly caring individual, which she demonstrated by being the main caregiver for Dad and in her determination to keep him at home as long as possible. A memorial service in celebration of Joan's life will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. If friends so desire, a memorial donation in Joan's memory may be made to the Arthritis Society - Manitoba Division or a charity of choice.
